Independent travel on Istanbul’s transport network
Plan metro, tram and ferry connections, check the correct direction and leave time for changes.

Save the venue name, street address and nearest stop. Check the final walking leg as well as the transit route. A neighbourhood name alone can lead you to the wrong entrance.
Choose useful rail lines
M2 serves central stops including Taksim, Şişhane, Şişli-Mecidiyeköy and Levent. T1 links historic-area stops such as Sultanahmet with Eminönü and Tophane. Use the official line map to identify the direction and interchange.
Plan the crossing between continents
Compare a rail connection with a ferry. Şehir Hatları publishes routes such as Kadıköy–Karaköy–Eminönü and Üsküdar–Karaköy–Eminönü. Check the exact pier and sailing direction, not only the district; a Bosphorus tour is a different service from a regular commuter crossing.
Check today’s operating information
Read the operator’s current timetable and disruption announcements before departure. Do not assume every route runs overnight or at the same frequency on weekends. Recheck the return journey and last departure.
Allow for transfers and accessibility
Leave time for walking between platforms or piers, queues and rush-hour crowding. Check station lifts and the boarding arrangements if you use a wheelchair or travel with a stroller. A route planner’s time is a planning aid, not a guaranteed arrival time.
At the stop and on the return
Read the destination on the vehicle and station signs before boarding. Keep enough card balance and a saved copy of your destination. Compare current operator information with the map route if they disagree; ask staff when a service is disrupted.
