Buy and load a transport card, check the balance and use it at the gate without confusing card cost with fares.

The physical card fee and money loaded onto it are separate. Ask for both amounts. Do not assume an anonymous visitor card has personalised-card discounts, free transfers or a refundable purchase price.
Find an official sales or loading point
Look for Biletmatik at transport stations or an official service point. Card stock and machine functions vary. Inspect the machine for unusual attachments; if it looks tampered with, use another machine and tell station staff.
Read the screen before paying
Choose a language you understand and check whether the machine is selling a card or only loading balance. Read accepted payment methods, banknotes and change rules on that machine. Collect the card and any receipt before leaving.
Load and confirm the new balance
Place the card on the marked reader, choose the loading amount and follow the screen. Keep it in place until the transaction finishes and the new balance appears. Online top-ups can require a further tap at a compatible reader or NFC device to transfer the instruction to the card.
Use the gate once, then check
Tap on the reader and wait for acceptance before walking through. Read the deduction and remaining balance. Fare rules differ across services; do not apply one metro fare to every ferry, Metrobus or Marmaray journey.
If the card does not work
Move other contactless cards away and try the centre of the reader once. Check the balance before retrying. Ask station staff for help; official İstanbulkart support is ALO 153. An unpersonalised anonymous card cannot be blocked or have its balance transferred after loss, according to the İBB FAQ.
