Buying a SIM in Istanbul without surprise charges
Choose a provider, compare the complete bill, activate your line and test it before leaving the shop.

Bring your original passport and ask the official shop which registration documents it requires. Your phone must be unlocked. For a physical SIM, check the supported size; for eSIM, confirm both device support and availability with that operator.
Choose and compare shops
Compare an airport counter with an authorised city shop. Save the Turkish shop name and address. Turkcell and Türk Telekom publish tourist offers; a logo on a sign alone does not establish that a reseller is authorised.
Ask for the complete price
Toplam fiyat ne kadar? means ‘What is the total price?’ Ask whether the SIM, activation and any charges are included. A package price and the complete new-line bill may differ. Get the final amount in TRY before you pay.
Match the package to your trip
Ask: Kaç GB ve kaç gün geçerli? Check data allowance, validity, domestic calls, international calls, hotspot rules and renewal. Do not assume ‘unlimited social media’ means all internet use is unlimited. Read the operator’s current conditions.
Activate and test in the shop
Ask staff to complete activation in your presence. Check your number, package and expiry in the confirmation message or operator app. Turn Wi-Fi off and test mobile internet; test a call if your package includes calls.
Keep proof and manage renewal
Keep the receipt and SIM/eSIM instructions. Ask how to check remaining data, top up and stop automatic renewal. If service fails, contact the operator or shop using your receipt; never share account passwords or one-time codes with strangers.
